The Hackney Voice has posted an audio piece about how the artist community in Hackney Wick was on the brink of destruction at the hands of over-zealous developers. Eleanor Fawcett - head of Olympic legacy design coordination at the LDA - told the Hackney Voice that if the recession hadn't pulled the plug on "huge" and "insensitive" schemes Hackney Wick would have changed completely. And the change wouldn't have included a load of artists.
The piece also features Joanna Hughes who set up Mother Studios in Hackney Wick. From what she says, artists might need some kind of political representation. It sounds like no person or institution stepped-in to save the day - just a financial crisis. Vietnamese, Chinese and Polish communities have no representatives in Hackney council, should artists be added to that list?
